My research question: How does age, gender, socioeconomic status affect whether certain societal expectations for language varies?
This research question has great potential, Mir. It addresses really important issues. Whose societal expectations for language are you proposing to examine? In other words, how does age, gender and socioeconomic status affect whose expectations for language variations?
what are the specific problems that face people, who try to learn and adapt to a second language?
Hi Ahmed. This is a great start but still too broad. Your revision was looking good in class today and I look forward to reading your revised research question in the new thread we started today.
My reasearch question: How does cultural background influence the development of ones’ identity?
I feel like you can narrow this down just a bit.
Great start Shankar. You ask a really compelling question. Still a bit too broad here. I look forward to reading your revised research question in the new thread we started today.
Research Question: How does immigration, in certain parts of the United States, affect the language of the future generation?
A great way to be concise with this question is specifying which part of the United States.
This is a really interesting question Melanie. I agree with Moamer that a great way to narrow down your question would be to look at a specific region or even city in the United States. I’m excited about knowing what you think. 🙂
How do speaking accents cause immigrants failure in career hiring?
This is a great start Yu Sun. I look forward to seeing which of the course readings you will draw on to explore this question.
Here is my research question: “How are neologisms influencing the English language’s global preeminence in the 21st century?”
Wow. I look forward to reading what you make of this big question in your essay. If I were you I would define “neologism” in a footnote.
Research Question: How far can work forces limit the use of Spanish speaking, due to it not being the ‘common language’ spoken among workers?
This is a super interesting question Anayae. I look forward to seeing how you synthesize course readings as you seek to explore it.
Research Question: Why is Standard English considered superior among all races?
Hello Emmanuel. This is very broad, but very interesting. This might really be the key question that we are addressing in this course. Let’s try to figure out how to narrow it down.
Research question: How has the 2016 presidential election affected the discrimination on Latinx people and their language particularly in the work force and school?
Hello Vanessa, this is an excellent question and you were doing great work revising it in class today. I look forward to reading your revised research question in the new thread.
How have socioeconomic expectations influenced the hierarchical standardization of English in America?
That’s a fine and precise question mate good job.
I love how your research question has grown directly out of the course readings and look forward to seeing your essay take form.
Research question: Why do people with a different dialect face hard time in finding stable jobs, in some parts of the Unites States?
Great question Kavya. I look forward to seeing how you synthesize course readings as you seek to explore it.
Research Question: How is English that isn’t Standard English treated in America and how does it affect employment?
This is a really important and compelling question Nafis. It’s still pretty broad and I look forward to reading your revised research question in the new thread we created today.

Hello Taylor. This is a fascinating question. I look forward to seeing what course readings you choose to draw on to start to explore it.
Is the cost of cultural or language mixing cause groups to constantly fight and have discourse?
Hello Brittany. Mixing languages is an interesting topic.
How does Standard English create a sense of internalized racism in Spanish Speaking communities?
